    No nerds, no birds..... No computers, no avionics, right?

    As most of us know, computing power have reached to multitudes of applications & industries.... oppsss.... "have reached" is the wrong thing to say as there are still many many more to go to reach the modern digital age....

    Inventors or so called "Nerds" who built these complex machinery starting from little electronic gadgets, transistors, memory chips, binary codes to trillions of embedded codes have made it's way into aircraft as avionics & further enhance flight conditions & performances.

    Nerds described aircrafts as an "Unbelieveable piece of Software & Hardware". Cool

    However, some are still sceptical about computer applications & avionics in aircrafts.... Should we give many thanks to these computer nerds or not? Another thoughts of the day to share..... Wink

    It is without denying that the usage of computerization and automation have greatly improved the safety and reliability of the aircrafts. It reduces the pilot load and subsequently pilot's error although NOT eliminating them. I'd say we are blessed with these development and making the sky and airplane, a very safe mode to travel.

    As for the function of computer applications in aircraft maintenance engineering works... helps to perform better aircraft turnaround rate, right? Yeah... It's a good thing indeed .. Else... We're gonna need lots of strength to work out with heavy loads of hardware. I can imagine both maintenance engineers & pilots will have to be "housekeepers" without what we have today. Still, there are many more things to modernize in terms of flight conditions & engineering works. More nerds needed please.... lol! .... just the good minded nerds. Wink

    Nice.. i like the avionics, computers.. some how here is the advantage and disadvantage about them. Here is example on the fly by wire;

    Advantage
    1)all computers are located in readily accessible avionics bay
    2)the environment for the computers is relatively benign, which simpifies the equipment qualification and certification
    3)the software is more easily written and validated since there are only few processor type and few large programs that can be physically integrated.

    Disadvantage
    1)many long buses (or wires in general) to collect and distribute data and commands
    2)increased vulnerability to damage from a single hazardous event if i were to occur in or near the avionics bay.
    3) software changes are more difficult; the impact of the change could affect a relatively large part of the software
